JANUARY2019 Morton/Method (APACHE™1 UPDATE)

The Morton/Method is continually evolving in areas that will enhance effectiveness. One area is tracking. As a Navy canine operator, tracking was not a priority. Tracking isn’t practical in a war environment because of the number of bodies on target and air support. We mastered the area search. A skill I have not transferred over to LE handlers because of the target set. I have written numerous After Action Reports on my handler teams and tracking hasn’t been the stronger suit. In 2018 we hammered tracking with handlers, not necessarily with canines, but in teaching handlers where they need to step up and hone in on identifying their canine’s change of behavior.

In 2019 my focus will be to take my area search concept and mold it into tracking to help handlers identify changes of behavior more easily and effectively. If this interest you, follow CTAC.

As for Apache™1….Towards the end of his six months of age, I brought him to my sniper course in Texas. I like the terrain, weather, animal distractions, and endless possible scenarios. The focus was tracking. Granted I was the track layer until the last track, but honestly at this point, on a track/trail, it wouldn’t matter who it was, Apache™1 would smoke it.  I focused on allowing the canine to make ‘obvious changes of behavior’.  This was difficult and not recommended if you don’t know exactly what you are doing. Another push I worked on was terrain. The rocky terrain and valleys are difficult for a canine to work, especially if high winds are in play. Below are a couple of tracking videos. Apache™1 will class up on April 1, 2019.

Canine Tactical Quick Grab: The concept we are endorsing with Apache™1 is push to borderline avoidance then throttle back..Take break..push.. then throttle back. Take break… A theory of the Morton/Method that differs from the mainstream standard methods of training the working canine.
